The Glass Menagerie
By Tennessee Williams
About the Collective
Broken Glass Collective is a group of established, professional theatre artists in Saskatoon, SK, with experience spanning generations of artistic practice on stages and in educational institutions across Canada. We present our inaugural production in Saskatoon this October, 2026 — The Glass Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams. Not since the 1977-78 theatre season have Saskatoon audiences seen this modern classic: one of the most famous plays from the twentieth century. We proudly present this important play to three new generations of Saskatoon theatre-goers.
Our first gathering over two years ago marked the start of a research-centred development process where, in exploring the vast literature on this famous play and its famous playwright, we marked unignorable and potent facts that inspired the production you are seeing today. We are excited to celebrate the original queerness and neurodivergence of these characters, drawing on our own lived experiences to do so.
Some notes from the director
The events of The Glass Menagerie take place almost ninety years ago, albeit through the prism of memory. Williams based a good amount of this play (but not all) on some his own family, and what he saw around him economically during the years of the Depression and those leading up to the second World War. Working on the play now almost feels like a warning of things to come.
But there are a few lines in this play that strike me now in a way that they haven’t before. And if I could hope for folks to leave the theatre with one of those lines in their mind, it would be that “being different is nothing to be ashamed of.” And if I could make a wish for you all, it would be for happiness and good fortune.
Thank you for joining us.
